Whoever said “men don’t make passes at guys who wear glasses” must have been nuts. I think eyeglasses some-times enhance a guy’s appearance. I mean, have a look at Mr. Stubble to the left here. Would you pass up a date with him? Of course you wouldn’t, and neither would I. 😉
I spent a fine evening with my old friend in the city last night. He had a nice blaze going in his fire pit, and we enjoyed the fire’s warmth for about an hour before picking up takeout Greek cuisine and dining indoors. I got home around 9:30 PM and chatted with a friend in Chile for a while. Then I climbed into bed with a book and read for an hour before switching off my nightstand lamp and drifting into dreamland.
I woke at eight this morning, and after brewing coffee and enjoying a quick breakfast, I got busy at the keyboard, banging out fresh material for my novel-in-progress, now at 84,000 words. This part of the book has been tough to write, since one of the main characters is undergoing chemotherapy to treat his Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. To prepare for writing this section, I interviewed a family member who underwent chemotherapy several years ago.
The side effects of chemo are devastating: hair loss, mouth sores, nausea, diarrhea, easy bruising, fatigue, weight loss and loss of appetite. A lot of patients end up looking like concentration camp survivors.
My other main character has to care for his partner while the treatments take place, and it’s rough because they have to live with the sick partner’s parents. The parents don’t approve of their son’s relationship with his partner, and needless to say, it’s a tense time for all involved.
We’re enjoying a beautiful day, here on the island: sunny, breezy and quite chilly, around 56 degrees F. That’s cold for central Florida, but I don’t mind. After all the heat we endured this past summer and fall, it feels good to wear a sweater and jacket for a change.
Since it’s Friday today, I’ll visit the city for my usual workout and lap-swimming at the YMCA, and then I’ll head back to the island. I may have a date tonight. If not, I’ll likely build a blaze in my fire pit on the patio. It’s that time of year.
Have nice Friday, friends, wherever you might be today.
